Fielding Independent Pitching is based on the following formula: (13*HR+3*BB-2*K)/IP. Defense Efficiency Ratio is (Non-catcher putouts/Batted Balls in Play), adjusted for ballpark. Circle sizes in this graph are proportional to the percent of fieldable balls successfully converted into outs by the fielders. |
The Rangers' Pitching and Fielding
Texas allowed a lot of runs because their pitching and defense were both pretty bad. Pitching, as measured by FIP, was third-worst. And their DER, adjusted for ballpark, was just about as bad as New York's. You can see from the size of the circle that their fielding left a lot to be desired. On the mound, the problem was in the rotation. Texas' bullpen was actually about league average. In the field, the Rangers appeared to be weak in the outfield. Ryan Christenson was the highest rated outfielder in fielding Win Shares, at 46th (Carl Everett, who spent half the year with the White Sox, was 20th). The GB/FB ratio of the Rangers' staff was about average. How to Read this Graph |

The Rangers' Individual Players
ARod had a horrid May, but he otherwise played like the leading talent he is. Michael Young had a fine year, and one of the Rangers' strengths is that young infield, which represented four of the top five leaders in Win Shares. On the mound, the Rangers' best pitcher was Francisco Cordero, who had a FIP of -0.17. Brian Shouse also deserves recognition for giving up only one home run in 61 innings.
